Introduction to the Book of 1st Kings - From Temple to Trouble
David transferred his kingdom AND his God to Solomon who flourished while building the Temple for his God. Connection with God made Solomon's reign glorious, that is until his foreign marriages changed the course of Israel’s history. Solomon not only worshiped his wives’ gods, but his successor set up idols for Israel that led the nation astray for decades and eventually sent them into exile.
When the hearts of people changed from worshiping God at His Temple to worshiping idols, on-going wars broke out between the families of Israel and Judah. Even though Elijah brought the people face to face with the one true God, their hearts remained hard, and their troubles increased—the same sad story of hard hearts today!
