“But if you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah.
Listen to what the Midianites are saying, and you will be greatly encouraged…
So Gideon took Purah and went down to the edge of the enemy camp.”
Judges 7:10-11
Even though I’d read this story countless times, I stopped in amazement when I noticed that GOD called Gideon’s servant by name! How could a simple servant be so privileged that his name appears on the pages of the Holy Bible?
To encourage Gideon before battle, God sent him down to the enemy camp to hear a message. Of course, Gideon could have gone alone, but GOD specifically instructed him to take his servant Purah with him. Evidently God wanted to make sure that Purah heard His message, too.
We often consider the role of servant as a lowly position, but GOD has a different point of view. At the side of his master, Purah was blessed to hear the encouraging prophecy from the enemy soldier…God has given Gideon victory over Midian! Purah was at the side of his master when Gideon bowed in worship. And alongside his master, they won a mighty victory.
Like Purah, I too am favored. My Master calls me by name, I get to serve at His side, and together we win mighty victories. But most amazing to me is how my Master makes sure I hear His messages…He simply holds me close by His side, so I will not miss a one!
All day long, every day, I too am a blessed servant!
