“…I will give all these lands to you and your descendants,
just as I solemnly promised Abraham, your father….
And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed.
I will do this because Abraham listened to me and obeyed all my requirements,
commands, decrees, and instructions.”
Genesis 26:3-5
Even though Abraham had died, the promises lived on. Numerous times God had assured Abraham that his descendants would be blessed. Those exact promises were passed on to Abraham’s son, Isaac, concerning his descendants, and years later Isaac blessed his son, Jacob with the same blessings.
Indeed, God did bless Jacob and spoke to him personally with promises to his descendants. Even after moving to Egypt, Jacob rehearsed those promises with his son, Joseph at the time he prayed blessings over his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. Joseph had so much faith in God’s promises that before he died, he boldly requested, “WHEN God comes to help you and lead you back, you must take my bones with you.”
What a legacy of family blessing, passed from generation to generation! Why? Isaac heard the reason twice: once when God spoke to his father as he lay on the altar of sacrifice, and again when God spoke to him personally, “I will do this because Abraham listened to me and obeyed…” Listening and obeying our God...the key to a life that will bless descendants for generations.
I wonder...am I passing blessings on to my kids?
