“They carried the Ark of God into the temple of Dagon and placed it beside an idol of Dagon.
But when the citizens of Ashdod went to see it the next morning, Dagon had fallen with his face to the ground in front of the Ark of the Lord! So they took Dagon and put him in his place again. But the next morning the same thing happened—Dagon had fallen face down before the Ark of the Lord again. This time his head and hands had broken off…
1 Samuel 5:2-4
When Dagon faced the presence of Almighty God, the poor guy could not even stand up! But more amazing is that his people had to pick Dagon up and put him back in his place! Their god, the one in whom they trusted, could not even stand on his own!
It’s comical to observe a “god” who already needed help standing, to fall AGAIN, and break into pieces. The effect of GOD’s presence is powerful! But this story always makes me wonder, in who or what do I trust? How many Dagon’s are in MY life? They may have names like education, title, money, or friends, but will they stand strong and never fall? And if they fall, will they have power to stand back up without my assistance?
There will always be Dagon’s in this world, but no matter how promising they sound, every one of them will fall. And just as Dagon broke to pieces, another part of my trusted system will break with each fall.
Isn’t it time to leave those Dagon cycles that always end in brokenness? There’s only One God who can stand on His own. So instead of trusting weak-legged Dagon’s, why not trust Almighty GOD!
HE will never need your help to stand back up…besides, HE will never fall!
