“One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority. But Jesus replied, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign...”
Matthew 12:38-39 NLT
Can you imagine demanding GOD to prove Himself? Besides, those Pharisees didn’t need more miraculous signs. When Jesus healed the blind, made the dumb speak, and raised the dead, everybody heard about it! And they couldn’t deny what they’d personally witnessed—a paralyzed man walked, a withered hand was restored, and Jesus had actually read their thoughts!
Jesus told the Pharisees only adulterous people would ask for a miraculous sign. Adulterous? Did Jesus mean people who leave the intimacy of relationship to go their own way? It seems like the Pharisees didn’t care about a relationship with God—they wanted THEIR own way. They wanted a religion of rules, THEIR rules!
However, if the Pharisees had opened their hearts to a relationship with God instead of a religion about God, they would have learned to known Jesus. And if they had known Jesus, they would have trusted Him. There would have been no need to fear, control, or demand.
When I truly understand relationship, neither will I need to be the one in control or demand God do things my way. The more I know Jesus, the more I trust Jesus! Demanding shrinks as relationship grows!
Relationship with God is not built on fear, but on trust.
And trust never needs to demand!
