“Then the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power…”
Judges 6:34
Standing between my parents on our way to church one Sunday, my Mother was shocked to discover that in her rush to dress me, she had forgotten my underpants! Fortunately, since I was only a toddler, she had an extra pair for me in her bag!
I wonder how many times, in our rush to be clothed with power, we too have forgotten something. We long to do mighty works for God and wonder why He doesn’t clothe us with power. Could it be that God is simply waiting for us to put on our undergarments first?
The Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power AFTER his actions demonstrated that he believed. Gideon first made a meal for the angel…in the middle of a famine. He built an altar to Yahweh-Shalom…even when he was afraid. He bravely torn down his father’s Asherah pole and altar to Baal…at the risk of his life. He sacrificed his father’s seven-year-old bull, one the family had miraculously hidden from the raiding Midianites for the entire seven years of their cruelty. THEN the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power…after Gideon trusted God enough to obey, no matter what.
God will put the outer garment of power on those who
first put on the under garment of faith.
