“Once again the Philistines were at war with Israel. And when David and his men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted. Ishbi-benob was a descendant of the giants…He had cornered David and was about to kill him. But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue and killed the Philistine…”
2 Samuel 21:15-17
Years ago, when I returned from a doctor-ordered sabbatical, I was surprised to read that David too became weak and exhausted in battle. In fact, when cornered by a giant, this famous giant slayer would have lost his life if his comrade had not come to his rescue.
The truth is, even mighty warriors become weary, but that’s why God never planned for anyone to fight battles alone. Just as Abishai was there to fight for David, so God put other warriors on our battlefield. When soldiers watch out for each other and fight TOGETHER, giants are slain, no matter how big they are or how many weapons they carry.
After seeing exhaustion almost kill their leader, David’s soldiers came TOGETHER even stronger. A new sword and a seven-pound spearhead had not stopped Abishai, so Sibbecai killed another giant, Saph, and Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath. When a giant with twenty-four fingers and toes dared to defy and taunt Israel, he was slain by David’s nephew. No giant could stand against these warriors when they all fought TOGETHER!
So, when you feel exhausted and perhaps a giant has backed you into a corner, don’t ever give up—another warrior is on the way! And after you’ve been rescued, will you then be the other warrior for the next soldier in need?
TOGETHER we slay giants—even when exhausted!
