“On the seventh day, having finished his task, God rested from all his work.”
Genesis 2:2
God resting, what an intriguing concept! Why would God need to rest? After all, isn’t He God Almighty, the All-Sufficient, All-Powerful One? He only had to speak, “Let there be…” and the world was created. So, why would God feel tired and need to take a break?
It’s true, God has many “power” names, but most of His other names show the caring side of that power. The Shepherd heart of God wants to LEAD His creation to green pastures and still waters. The Father heart of God wants to SHOW them exactly how to rest when they get there!
God knew that eventually His weary children would need refreshment on their wilderness journey. God knew that centuries later their descendants would wear themselves out from stress, running here, there, and everywhere. Therefore, He chose to demonstrate exactly what do—REST!
What a loving Creator. Even in the beginning of His story, God could see down through the ages. He knew how exhausted we would feel today in the middle of our hectic world. But He cared so much that He left us an example of how to handle that stress—Our God RESTED!
So, don’t you think we can trust God’s other examples in the rest of His Book?
