“Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around.”
1 Kings 3:7
Have you ever stepped into a new job, only to feel like running away when you realized the immensity of the task? That must be how Solomon felt when he took over the throne of a kingdom so great and numerous, they could not be counted!
Fortunately, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked what he wanted. Solomon admitted that this nation was GOD’s own chosen people, and who by himself could govern what belonged to God? So instead of asking for riches or fame, Solomon asked for help, “Give me wisdom.”
I wondered why Solomon made such a humble request until I noticed, “Solomon loved the Lord.” (v. 3) Through relationship, Solomon realized how awesome God was, but evidently, he also realized how “small” he was. Perhaps that’s why Solomon could unashamedly admit he needed help!
I also have the privilege of relationship with a Father who wants to give me whatever I need to accomplish whatever task He assigns. He simply waits for me to realize that I too am like a little child who doesn’t know my way around! And yet, My Father makes me feel so secure in our relationship that I am not afraid to run to Him like a little child and cry…
“Help me, Daddy! I can’t do this by myself!”
