“This is what you must do. You must break down their pagan altars and shatter
their sacred pillars. Cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols.
For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth,
the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.”
Deuteronomy 7:5-6
Most parents have heard the question, “Do I HAVE to clean my room?” The Israelites were told to clean, not just one room, but the whole house…and clean it with zeal! Why? Because they were holy people…they belonged to the Lord…HE had chosen them to be HIS treasures. This holy God loved them and planned to live in their house! It is hard to imagine such a relationship, even for us who God lovingly invites today. However, for anyone to enjoy the privilege of relationship with a holy God, the whole house must be cleaned.
Moses made it clear who was responsible to clean…This is what YOU must do. Certainly, God promised to lavish His unfailing love on those who obeyed, and certainly He would bless them abundantly in the Promised Land. (v. 12-15) But the Israelites had to do their part…obey and clean their house!
Additionally, the Israelites’ obedience gave them the advantage of God’s power! (v. 16-20) If they were afraid of the inhabitants in the land, Moses told them to remember how God’s powerful arm had destroyed the Egyptians. God would use that same power against ALL their enemies!
What powerful teamwork…
God’s people obey and clean house…
God defeats their enemies.
I choose to apply THAT teamwork in my life!
