“My Towering Rock”

“From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me."

Psalm 61:2-3

I had tried so long to “fix myself,” but when change became an illusion, my heart became overwhelmed.

As a shepherd, the psalmist understood the importance of getting sheep to safety, to a place hidden from preying animals. So, no wonder when he felt overwhelmed by troubles, David asked HIS Shepherd to lead him to the towering rock of safety.

My God, THE Towering Rock, is the impressively high, imposing Rock, above all others! In fact, David declared, “He ALONE is my rock…my fortress where I will NOT be shaken…a rock where NO enemy can reach me.” (Ps 62) However, David knew the key to TRUSTING this Towering Rock“Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in HIM.”

When I encountered this verse, "all that I am" was only a pile of debris from many poor choices, an exhausted body, and an overwhelmed heart. But with THAT, I chose to wait, putting my efforts on hold and looking forward to God’s! Furthermore, I chose to wait quietly, letting peace and calm replace my endless activity. And as I waited, my vision miraculously cleared! THEN I began to see a God I could TRUST!

The Towering Rock can only protect those who trust Him enough to run to HIS shelter!

"Lord, help me wait, so I can run!"
