“Then Joshua told the people, ‘Purify yourselves,
for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.’”
Joshua 3:5

There is no pun intended here, but to some people, purity sounds like a “dirty word!” They assume purity is obeying legalistic rules that kill their right to freedom. However, Joshua’s words to the Israelites prove quite the opposite…purity opens the door to great wonders!
There were two members on the team in this story, and each had a specific role to play. The PEOPLE would purify themselves, and GOD would perform miracles. Notice the specific order of their tasks...the people had to act first, THEN God would do His part.
The Israelites’ assignment was vital for teamwork to succeed. Teaming up with a holy God called for holy people. Only after completing the purification process could the people be connected to a holy God, and only then could HE perform His task…great wonders. Purity opened the way for connection with the God of miracles, and HE opened a way through the Jordan River and into their Promised Land.
Purity is still our connection to God who still performs miracles. But we have a role to play in that story…above all else, guard our hearts. (Proverbs 4:23) Even though our purity comes from Jesus, we are responsible to begin the process. When we do our part, God will do His. And the resulting great wonders do NOT sound dirty to me!
