“While I Am Sleeping”

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field. But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat, then slipped away. When the crop began to grow and produce grain, the weeds also grew.”

Matthew 13:24-26 NLT

One of my favorite girlie movies is, “While You Were Sleeping.” An entire family’s history is altered by deception that was sown while their son slept in a coma. That sleep story had a happy ending, but the sleep story Jesus told did not!

While the workers slept, an enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat—weeds that could hinder growth, weeds that could kill the wheat completely. The people responsible to care for that field were unaware of any danger, because the weeds were sown while they were sleeping!

I wonder if I too am unaware of what’s growing “underground” in the field for which I’m responsible. How many days do I allow to pass while I sleep instead of spending time with my Father? Do I sleep so long without reading the Word that I forget the sound of HIS voice? Perhaps I've simply allowed the voices in my dreams to drown out the most important Voice!

I must stay alert! Whether I am literally asleep, or just oblivious to danger, while I am sleeping, the enemy is busy planting weeds. And if I allow those weeds to grow, little by little they will choke out the Truth!

Father, I’m grateful for the Truth You’ve planted in my heart—

But please help me stay awake to guard it!
